Home Staging Vs. Interior Decorating
Posted on | May 18, 2009 |
As a home staging professional in Atlanta, Georgia I’m often asked what the difference is between home staging and interior decorating. Truth be told when I’m shopping for accessories to be used in a home staging project, it feels exactly the same as when I’m shopping for an interior decorating/redesign project. After all, a lamp is a lamp. Or is it?
On the surface, it’s easy to see how the two can be confused. Home staging uses furniture and accessories as does interior decorating. Items purchased for a home staging project are the same stores used for interior decorating jobs.
The truth of the matter is that there are distinct differences between the two.
A good way of looking at it is:
- Expressions of the home are delivered through home staging.
- Expressions of the homeowner are delivered through interior decorating.
I factor in the following based on the project:
With home staging - it’s important that I highlight the features the home has to offer as well as the space. My objective is to have home to appeal to a broad base of prospective buyers. At the same time, I need to understand the demographics of the buyer. The “style” of the home is also another important element in deciding what decor will be used. As for that lamp I purchase for a home staging project - if it’s a contemporary home, you can be assured it won’t be a traditional-like lamp.
With interior decorating - it’s important that I understand the likes and dislikes of the homeowner and deliver. My objective is to ensure the decor used are items that reflect their personalities. The lamp I purchase will always reflect the homeowner.
Sure, I may in the end be shopping at the same stores purchasing furniture and accessories but that lamp I purchase will always be distinct based on the project that lies ahead.
Whether you’re selling your home or looking for an interior decorator, we understand what it takes to make your home appealing.

Kathy: As a home stager and interior designer, I agree with all you have said. When we design for clients, their taste and comfort is paramount. When we are staging, we are appealing to the home buyer, not the home owner.
