How to decorate a long narrow living room
Yes, long narrow living rooms can be difficult to arrange. However, with some proper planning you can implement a plan that is not only warm and welcoming but one that works for you and your family.
Here’s a picture of a living room before we brought in the furniture, art and accessories. As you can see, the room is definitely long and most definitely narrow.

Now here’s what the room looks like after:

Note: The front door is to the right of the two chairs.
Here’s how to decorate a long narrow living room:
- Define your layout. Perhaps the most challenging part of decorating a long narrow room is figuring out how best to layout the furniture. Your first step is to consider the following:
- Location of the kitchen. In the picture above, the kitchen is directly opposite of the two chairs (meaning at the other end). Why is this important? Kitchens are known to gather family and friends; so having additional liveable space that can accommodate more friends and family works nicely.
- Location of the front door
- Location of the windows, fireplace, etc..
- Consider creating separate areas within the same room. In the case of this home, we have a sitting area at one end and the sofa, armoire, etc… close to the kitchen.
- List your furniture items. For example, if you have two sofas as oppose to one, write it down. Do this for all of the pieces you want to ensure are brought into the room.
- Experiment. You can either do this by bringing in the items or using cut-outs on the pieces you own. What’s important is that you like the layout and that it feels comfortable.
- Accessorize: Once the layout if complete, add in your accessories. Art, lamps, greenery, etc… will fall easily into place.
