How to Decorate a Small Living Room
Small rooms really have a way of making it harder to decorate; don’t they? They test us in every way possible as they seem to narrow our selections. However, with a little pre-planning, you can overcome the challenge and create a warm and welcoming space. In a minute, I’ll show you how.
As a professional stager in Atlanta, Georgia, I’m put to the task on a regular basis with creating solutions on how best to showcase the home. These “tricks-of-the-trade” can be used by any homeowner who is faced with a similar dilemma.
First, let’s look at how the room turned out:

Solutions for decorating a small living room:
- Start with the scale of the furniture - In this example, we chose a smaller size sofa and matching chair (not pictured) so that we could accommodate an end table.
- Choose the right colors - By design, we chose a light color for both the sofa and the chair and a mossy green for the throw pillows. Bolder colors can have a way of consuming the space. A good rule of thumb is to go light.
- Light it Up - Ample lighting will help also help expand the space. Floor lamps are a great solution for small living rooms
- Keep it Simple - Be selective in the accessories you bring in. For small rooms, you want to ensure the scale of the accessories are appropriate for the space.
